Coping with Cycles in Provenance
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper considers the issue of cycles in provenance metadata. Cyclic provenance poses a problem as they hide the distinction between ancestors and decendants. Yet this distinction is at the heart of provenance. Our contributions are: development of terminology, defining the parameters of our ideal solution and present and evaluate four approaches to cyclic provenance. Before diving into a set of goals and possible solutions, we define terms for discussing cyclic provenance. This terminology is then used to state our objective. Informally, our ideal approach would avoid on disk cycles, retain maximal information using minimal data. We then present and compare five approaches to coping with cyclic provenance: retaining cycles, versioning, node merging, provenance copying and implicit versioning. We describe the concept behind each approach, summarize its implementation and assess its strengths and weaknesses.

Fluvial Facies and Provenance of the Early Permian Warchha Sandstone Salt Range, Pakistan
Deposits of the Warchha Sandstone in the Salt Range, Pakistan are characterised by a range of fluvial facies and architectural elements that together preserve a record of both the proximal and distal parts of a meandering river system that drained the northern margin of Gondwanaland. Several fining-upward cycles are recognised and completely preserved cycles can be divided in to three parts; a ...

Obsidian artifacts is frequently used materials in prehistory and found widely in archaeological sites. Provenance studies of obsidian has been an issue of intense research and debate between archaeologists and geologists. Since different provenance studies has been carried out from 1960s up to 2015 in Anatolia and Caucasus but obsidian studies in Iran is in very early stage and consider as ter...
متن کاملLate Cenozoic oscillations of Antarctic ice sheets revealed by provenance of basement clasts and grain detrital modes in ANDRILL core AND-1B
Petrological investigations of the sand fraction and of granuleto cobble-sized clasts in the Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary cycles of the AND-1B drill core at the NW edge of the Ross Ice Shelf (McMurdo Sound) highlight significant down-core modal and compositional variations. These variations provide: (i) direct information about potential source regions during both glacial maxima and minima; and...
متن کاملPetrography, Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Kuhkamar Shale in the Roum section (South of Qayen): Application for Provenance and Tectonic setting
The Kuhkamar shale with a thickness of 354 m is composed of siliciclastic rocks (sandstone and shale). Petrography studies of the sandstones in this area show two petrofacies including arkose and sub-arkose. These sandstones composed of sub rounded to moderately sorted; therefore, compositionaly to texturaly, they are immature to submature with mono and polycrystalline quartz and k-feldespar. I...
متن کاملUse of feldspar grains in provenance determination and the study of transportation and depositional history, examples from central and NW Iran
Feldspar grains, as a significant provenance indicator, of two terrigenous formations from Central Iran, the Upper Red Formation, and Moghan area, Zivah Formation, are used for provenance determination and the study of transportation and depositional history. The Upper Red Formation (URF) is volumetrically the most important siliciclastic unit of the Central Iran and Zivah Formation (ZF) repres...
